Having lived in Narbonne for over fifteen years now, I have had plenty of opportunities to test the local restaurants. The chic, gourmet establishments are easy to find, just look in the Michelin guide for Table Saint Crescent, or even better l'Auberge du Vieux Puits, both outstanding in terms of quality and service, a treat for the eyes as well as the palate. However, what if you've had a busy day house hunting, or showing your guests round the area, and you just want to go and relax and eat something good, without too much Tra La La?
En Face is one of my favourites.
This is the type of restaurant one imagines when thinking of living in France, down to the chalk menu and the red checked tablecloths. It is situated in the centre of Narbonne , facing the canal, among a row of similarly attractive eateries, all trying to entice you with their menu of the day. I have never been disappointed at this one.
The staff are friendly and eager to please, (the same team for the last several years, which is a good sign) and the menu, although limited, manages to have something for everyone.
You will find the usual 'South of France' goodies, copious salads, home made terrines, the ubiquitous but delicious magret de canard, freshly caught fish, the best entrecote steak in town, plus some delightful desserts. A three course meal for two with their excellent local house wine will be 40 to 50 euros. They also have a selection of very good bottles from the wonderful vineyards in the region - just ask for advice.
It is always busy at lunchtime, mainly with locals working in town, so it's worth calling an hour or two before, or being ready to wait for a table !
