Eve and Thierry Gravelle took over the Domaine in 2003, when it was virtually abandoned. Comprising 6 vineyards over 3 hectares it is certainly one of the smaller wineries in the Languedoc, but this allows Eve and Thierry to nurture their 35 year old vines in a way that larger vineyards cannot.
The harvest is done by hand, fertilizers are not used and the wine cellar is run with very traditional methods. Stone cellars from the late 19th Century house wine barrels and each wine is made in relation to its own vineyard and in small amounts.
The grape varieties grown are Merlot, Chardonnay and Marselan. Thierry likes to work a variety of different ways with the grapes, creating red wines with merlot of exceptional quality, both with power and finesse and a wide range of aromas from fruity to spicy.
Located west of Carcassonne, near the Canal du Midi, the vineyards are south-facing with their Mediterranean influences tempered by the Atlantic tides.
In the 2nd Century there was a Gallo Roman villa on the site, then it was a village with a church up to 1790. The church, St Martin, was very important in the Languedoc in 1242 as the count of Toulouse, Raymond VII, came to Villarzens to deliver the keys of Bram castle to a representative of the King of France.
There is a choice of red and white wines, the bottle is sold between 5.90 and 15.00 Euros for special vintages
Special vintages such as 'In Extremis', 'Cuvée Virgile' and 'Villarzens par les filles' are all produced in quantities of less than 500 bottles.
In 2012, Domaine de Villarzens won 2 gold medals in the Gilbert & Gaillard guide, for its Chardonnay 'Domaine de Villarzens' and 'l?Eburomagus' red. All their wines can be bought directly from the Domaine and you are welcome all year round to have a tasting.
