Domaine d’Escapat is located in the village of Villeneuve-Minervois near the medieval city of Carcassonne in Languedoc-Roussillon – the largest wine producing region in the world.
Bruno Ohlzon, originally from Sweden, has had what is called a ‘portfolio career’, starting as an ice hockey player in the Swedish elite league and then successful business careers in roofing, real estate and the financial world.
His interest in wine started when he created a wine agency while he played hockey in Madrid during the 1990’s. From his agency in Spain, Bruno delivered wines to premium Stockholm restaurants.
He bought Domaine d’Escapat in 2012 which has 44 hectares of vineyard classified as AOP Minervois (8.2 ha) and Vin de Pays (IGP). A great deal of the property has been renovated in recent years with more than 60% of the vineyards now planted with noble grape varieties and about 40% that are less than 10 years old. The vineyard produces fourteen different grape varieties and is equipped with modern technology to ensure the correct conditions for high quality wine production.
The first house was built on the property in 1769. Two years after the French Revolution, Monsieur Etienne Jacques Escapat purchased the property at an auction with money that came from his new wife who was the daughter of a successful garment manufacturer in Carcassonne.
Winemaking has been in progress on the Domaine since 1900.
The surrounding scenery is simply beautiful; wild and spectacular. The proximity to the sea and the mountains has a positive impact on the character of the wines. In addition, the Mediterranean climate, with 300 days of sunshine per year, provides an advantage for the grapes.
Bruno is passionate about his wines and says, “I won’t spank the French with my wine but I’ll show them that even a Swede, dressed in jeans and T-shirt, can deliver.”
The Domaine produces several white, rosé and red wines:
Le Capitaine Chardonnay is a 100% Chardonnay white wine with a round aroma of ripe green apples, peach and tones of minerals and a light buttery taste and pleasant acidity. It was awarded a star in ‘Le Guide Hachette’ and is perfect with grilled fish, white meat, poultry, cheeses and salads.
White Emotion is 100% Muscat with a light straw yellow color and intense and fresh aromas of muscat grapes and toasted hazelnuts. Perfect with seafood, grilled white fish or as an aperitif. It won the highest award for both taste and design in the contest Women and Wines of France.
Le Capitaine Rosé is 100% Syrah and is a strawberry pink colour with fresh and fruity grapefruit and raspberry and a hint of herbs.
Numero Six Prestige is a red wine made from Grenache and Syrah. It has a dark ruby color and aromas of red fruits and leather. Raspberry, black currant, and with a well-integrated oak flavor.
Le Capitaine Minervois is another red made with 86% Syrah, 10% Grenache and 6% Mourvèdre. It has an intense garnet color and the aroma is complex with hints of wild berries.The palate is generous, rich and smooth with aromas of small red and black berries. Perfect with red meat and game.
Vieilles Vignes, this red wine comes from their oldest vines planted in 1957 and is 100% Carignan. It has a dark ruby color with a taste of raspberry, blackberry and vanilla as well as hints of bay leaf and mineral aromas that reflect the unique soil that surrounds the vines. Perfect with grilled meats and dishes with venison or lamb.
The house and three gîtes are available for year round rental that have been tastefully renovated with high quality materials and beautiful views over the surrounding rolling vineyards. With large airy rooms and a swimming pool, they offer the perfect spot to relax after a hard day’s site seeing or wine tasting.
