Nestled on the outskirts of Béziers is a vineyard stretching across 30 hectares that has earned a well deserved reputation for producing fine wines and leading the way in innovative and modern methods.
The Domaine La Colombette (little dove) consistently wins awards each year, most notably in 2009, and twice has won an award for the best Chardonnay in the world.
Vincent Pugibet runs it today, but says that the Domaine started with very humble beginnings when his grandfather was given a hectare of land in order to grow vines. Since then, and over five generations, the domaine has expanded to its present size.
Vincent's father took over the domaine when horses were still being used. He started to modernize and experiment, planting excellent grape varieties and began to use machinery to harvest the grapes. Technology allowed him to spend more time in the wine cellars experimenting with temperatures and barrels. After graduating with an agricultural engineering diploma, Vincent joined his father in 1997 and continued to develop and modernize the estate.
Wine normally has an alcohol content of around 14-15% but Vincent has developed a way to extract the alcohol from the wine and produces a range of wines (Plume and Pugibet (each with a white, rosé or red) with 9-12.5%. He has also introduced screw top bottles and designed a state of the art irrigation system which gives just the right amount of water to the plants. He has a depth of knowledge on organic growing methods and the different soil types on which he grows white and red grapes. He is introducing grape varieties that are not normally found in this region but which are resistant to disease and pests. For all these reasons they have been awarded a Gold Medal by the Wine Innovation Awards.
The widest range of their wines is the Colombette with a choice of 6 reds, 5 whites and 2 rosés, some of which are organic (or 'bio' in France).
With a little notice, they will be delighted and proud to give you a guided tour around the estate and a taste of their fabulous wines. Make sure there is plenty of room in the boot of your car as you will surely be stocking up your wine cellar at home with these fabulous wines!
